Gamma Emerald Controller Not Working: Input Fixes

Fix a controller that is not detected, double-inputs or stops responding in Gamma Emerald EA on Windows and Steam Deck.

Updated August 16, 2026

Use one input device for the session

Gamma Emerald supports controllers, but the developer recommends connecting only one peripheral and avoiding mid-session switching. Duplicate physical and virtual controllers are the most common cause of ignored buttons, two menu moves from one press, or changing button prompts.

  1. Close the game.
  2. Disconnect every controller except the one you intend to use.
  3. Exit DS4Windows, reWASD, vJoy or other virtual-controller tools for the first test.
  4. Connect the controller before launching PokemonEmerald.exe.
  5. Use the keyboard to reach the menu if necessary, then test the controller once.

Confirm Windows can see the controller

Press Win + R, enter joy.cpl, and open the controller properties. Buttons and sticks must register there before Gamma Emerald can use them. If they do not, reconnect the cable, change USB ports, re-pair Bluetooth, or install the controller maker's current driver.

Steam Input: choose one translation layer

If you add Gamma Emerald as a non-Steam game, Steam Input can translate unsupported controller types. It can also conflict with another mapper. Start with only Steam Input enabled and every other remapper closed. If inputs double, disable Steam Input for the shortcut and test the controller directly. Do not enable both layers at once.

Reset input settings

Close the game, back up PokemonEmerald\Saved, and rename Saved\Config to Config-backup. Relaunch to create clean defaults. This is safer than deleting the whole Saved folder, which also contains progress and logs.
