Current platform support
The Early Access release is made for 64-bit Windows 10 and 11. There is no native macOS or Linux download. Proton, Wine and virtual machines are compatibility approaches around the Windows build; success on one configuration does not create official support for the platform.

Linux and Proton
Follow the same pattern as Steam Deck: unzip the full Windows release, add PokemonEmerald.exe to Steam, force one Proton version, and allow the first shader compile to finish. Keep only one controller translation layer active. Back up the Saved folder before changing prefixes or moving the installation.
macOS options and limits
Modern Apple silicon Macs cannot run the x64 Windows executable natively. A virtualized Windows-on-ARM environment must then translate both CPU and graphics calls, and Unreal Engine shader behavior can vary. Intel Macs that support Boot Camp can run a normal Windows installation, but available GPU memory and driver age still need to meet the game's requirements.
If your Mac is the only computer available, remote play from a supported Windows PC is often more predictable than stacking translation layers. Avoid downloads labeled as a Mac port unless the developer announces one on the current EA page.
Keep compatibility tests reversible
- Keep an untouched copy of the current Windows download.
- Back up
PokemonEmerald\Savedafter every major checkpoint. - Record the OS, compatibility version and launch arguments that worked.
- Change only one variable between tests.
- Return to Windows for a clean comparison before reporting a game-wide bug.
